Tonya majored in Broadcast Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career in television working for CBS and NBC in North Carolina. Tonya co-produced “Video Street Scenes”, a music television series debuting in 1998 on WUPN-48  in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Tonya went on to establish “Center Screen Entertainment”  and in 2005 she produced the first-ever behind-the-scene television special for the National Black Theatre Festival in North Carolina. The festival attracted thousands of influential artists and gained the support of Dr. Maya Angelou, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis,  August Wilson, and Oprah Winfrey.  

 Tonya relocated to New York and in 2003, she produced the television series, ”Uptown Flavor TV” which showcased various elements and areas of Harlem, a historic community in New York City, described by some as the mecca for Black culture in the United States.

 Tonya is also an accredited actress. She has worked with several prestigious NY theatre companies including Douglas Turner Ward's Negro Ensemble Company. She received recognition for her performance as Rosa Parks in the National Theatre of the Performing Arts production of The Rosa Parks Story.  She has also appeared in various independent films including the feature film, “Sophisticated Romance”.
